Time Spent Amongst Trees Is Never Time Wasted

All of us, as inhabitants of planet Earth, are required to do all that is possible in our power to keep our environment clean and safe for us and our future generations .The environment is undergoing a lot of changes that are typically not good, and it is our responsibility to make sure that we do something about it .Even the smallest steps would matter as our environment is at great risk, and so are we .

Trees have been with us throughout our whole lives. They are the background of a favorite memory and a welcome patch of green our eyes seek as we gaze outdoors. While they are silent and stationary, trees hold tremendous superpowers, including the powers to make all our lives better and healthier.

Trees clean the air, give shelter to birds, give us shade -and that’s a good thing but why punch nails into it?

Tree’s bark is designed to protect the inner rings of tree from damage. When a nail/screw/staple is inserted, it damages the bark and punctures the inside of the tree. This can cause stress that inhibits growth and increases the tree’s vulnerability to disease.

Nail-free Tree

We have taken up a unique task to save the environment. In the past four months, we have been going to different places of city, removing nails, iron rods and screws in tree trunks. This is an attempt to increase the life span of trees.

Trees can live upto 300 years and more, nailing makes them weak and the risk of falling during strong winds and rain goes up. So far, we have removed hundreds of pins and nails.

Nails & Pins collected in one of the events

We would like to share one of the beautiful incidents a volunteer witnessed and came across to share with us –

“It was a blissful Sunday morning, and I was traveling to the Parahitam’s 1st year celebration volunteers meet and greet, on the way to the venue I happen to pass by the beautiful trees near Vijayanagar TTMC bus stand where we usually conduct our de-nailing events, and I found an old man and a young child standing near the trees. I instantly recognised the old man , as we had met him in one of the earlier de-nailing events , so I went up to them and asked what were they doing so early in the morning by the trees , so in reply the old man said that he had seen a group of youth had been de-nailing the trees 2 weeks before, and it gave him the motivation to do the same so he brought along his grandchild to do the good deed with him and to teach him at young age about the importance of environment .The great old man did not recognize me , but I did thank him for doing the service to the nature.”

All of us were really happy after listening to this and felt rewarding. It is so fulfilling to hear when people come forward, inspired by seeing your work and contribute towards the same.

Love to breathe, save the Trees.

Be it big or small, your actions matter. Save the environment.
